Case study by Michael Mancuso.](https://mancuso.ai/og/symx-acquisitions.webp) Led the acquisition of Guest Technologies and Active RFID Systems as Chief Technology Officer of SYMX Healthcare, securing $6M in new business and integrating the acquired technical teams into one product organization. 01 ## Challenge SYMX Healthcare was a healthcare technology company whose growth depended on its product for improving hospital operations, a product I had pitched and developed. Extending that product and reaching new customers faster than organic growth allowed meant acquiring companies with complementary technology and customer relationships. As CTO and VP of Product, I was responsible for the technology side of that strategy: evaluating the targets, leading the acquisitions of Guest Technologies and Active RFID Systems, and then combining three technical teams and their products into one organization without losing the business the acquisitions had brought. 02 ## Action I led both acquisitions from the technology seat and owned the integration that followed: - **Product as the Growth Engine:** Pitched and developed the product that improved hospital operations and drove SYMX's growth, which created the case for acquiring complementary companies. - **Target Evaluation:** Assessed the technology, products, and teams of Guest Technologies and Active RFID Systems to understand what each would add and what it would take to integrate them. - **Acquisition Leadership:** Led the acquisition of both companies, representing technology and product in deal decisions. - **Technical Team Integration:** Integrated the acquired technical teams into SYMX's engineering and product organization, aligning people, products, and practices after each deal closed. - **RFID Capability:** Brought Active RFID Systems' capability into SYMX's healthcare product line, the foundation for the company's later large-scale RFID deployments. 03 ## Results The two acquisitions expanded SYMX's business and its technical capability: - **$6M in New Business:** The acquisitions of Guest Technologies and Active RFID Systems secured $6M in new business for SYMX. - **Two Acquisitions Integrated:** Both technical teams were integrated into a single product and engineering organization under my leadership. - **Expanded Product Line:** SYMX gained RFID capability alongside its hospital operations product, broadening what it could offer healthcare customers. - **Buy-Side Experience:** This startup buy-side work preceded my later role as technology lead on corporate acquisitions at Owens & Minor, where the same discipline of assessing targets and planning integration applied at a $12B distributor. ## In their words Recommendations from people who were there, in their own words. > I worked with Mike when he was the CTO of SYMX, and I was looking for an RFID asset tracking solution. SYMX Healthcare acquired Guest Technologies and Active RFID Systems. Michael Mancuso led both acquisitions as Chief Technology Officer and VP of Product, securing $6M in new business. What was Michael Mancuso's role in the acquisitions? He evaluated the targets' technology, products, and teams, led the acquisitions from the technology seat, and integrated the acquired technical teams into SYMX's engineering and product organization. How does this compare with the Owens & Minor M&A work? At SYMX, Michael led buy-side acquisitions at a startup he helped grow. At Owens & Minor, a $12B distributor, he served as technology lead on a five-person core acquisition team for $200M+ in acquisitions. Both required assessing target technology and planning integration. ## Start with the problem, _not the proposal._ Talk with me about what you need to build, fix, or decide.
